Why version two?

The original DOMINO fermented foods infographic just got a makeover!

At the beginning of the Domino project, we developed and shared a first version of the fermented foods infographic (available in English, French, Estonian, German, Italian and Spanish). This version, along with our other communication materials, were tested by consumer focus groups in Germany. The main research questions were:

“How effective are visual communication tools (infographic, identity cards, and quiz) in communicating scientific information about fermented foods to German consumers within a Social Lab setting, and how do these tools influence their understanding, trust, and intentions regarding fermented foods?”

Two focus groups were conducted. First, the groups were given general knowledge about fermentation, then, they were asked to evaluate Domino materials according to following criteria:

  1. Clarity of presented information
  2. Amount and density of information
  3. Visual layout and design
  4. Relevance and usefulness for consumers
  5. Context of exposure to the information

Visual tools can improve understanding and awareness of fermented foods, but their effectiveness depends heavily on simplicity, clarity, and context of use. Hence, this latest fermented foods infographic is now refined based on consumer testing, to ensure we are co-developing materials that are communicating about fermented foods in a way that is clear, understandable and as always, science-based. Thanks to this work we have identified the first version as a good resource for researchers or fermentation enthusiast, that have already some knowledge of the topic o a scientific background, while this new infographic is specifically designed for the general public, and part of a bigger set of resources.

To pair the materials together, we’ve established a ‘hierarchy’: the infographic is the entry point to know more, while the fermented foods card game (coming soon) establishes an interactive approach to learning more about specific types of fermented foods and the microorganisms responsible for their fermentation, and lastly, the fermented foods quiz allows people to test the knowledge gained.
